A Window Into The World Of Women

Daughter Of India wins Gold at 2022 Commonwealth Games

The Tokyo Olympic silver medalist Saikhom Mirabai Chanu has made the country proud yet again by winning India’s first Gold Medal at the ongoing 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, United Kingdom.  The 27-year-old lifted a total of 201kg in the 49kg weight class. The fact that the difference between her and silver medallist Marie Ranaivosoa of Mauritius was a huge 29kgs shows how dominating Chanu’s performance was.

The Padma Shri Awardee won her third consecutive medal at the Common Wealth Games after her silver in 2014 in Glasgow and the gold at Gold Coast 2018 in the 48 kg category.

She gave an excellent performance in the snatch round itself by successfully lifting 84kg in the first attempt and 88kgs in the second attempt giving her personal best and setting a CWG record. In the Clean and Jerk category, Mirabai successfully lifted 109kg in her first attempt and 113kg in her second attempt. Even though it didn’t land well in her final attempt of 115kg, it did not matter as India’s first gold of this edition of the CWG was already confirmed.

An inspiration to many, she is in a league of her own, always trying to push her own boundaries and setting up records one after another. Despite not playing at her peak, she managed to live up to everyone’s expectations and achieved another milestone.

She has been one of the most successful weightlifters in India and has won medals from the Commonwealth Games and the Asian Championships along with her gold medal from the 2017 World Championships.

India has been the traditional powerhouse in weightlifting at the CWG with more than a ton of medals and with gems like Mirabai Chanu, India’s future in weightlifting seems to hold many more achievements.
